I read the Dune series - referring of course to the Frank Herbert books - out of order. For some reason, I read parts 4, 5 and 6 under the impression that #4 was #2 or something. Having seen the David Lynch version of Dune about a billion times it still made sense - insofar as a narrative about future-sight and deserts made of basically Mana can make sense.
One image that stuck with me in particular was the 'God-Emperor', Leto Atreides, who grafted worms to his body and became in essence a human sandworm. He was completely invulnerable to all possible harm except for
- The products of his own breeding program, whom he kept close
- Water, which was instantly fatal
And I never was quite as impressed as the narrative seemed to want.
